planning a diet for weight lossAmerican comedic author Erma Bombeck once wrote, “Never order food in excess of your body weight.” It might sound silly, but thanks to years of super-sizing everything from fries to fillets, 2013 began with me planning a diet for weight loss.

From year 2000 until 2010 the amount of people on a diet jumped from 24% to 54% of the American population (www.caloriecontrol.org). Do you know what that means? If you are on a diet then obviously you are not alone. Even celebrities like Jessica Simpson and Jennifer Hudson are advertising their need to shed a few pounds.

Because you aren’t the only person dieting, consider getting a diet buddy who you trust to help keep you going during the low points – and there will be low points. It could be your best friend, a family member, or a co-worker. For me, that person is my husband. [Read more…]

sleepless babyAmerican author H. Jackson Brown, Jr. wrote, “Always kiss your children goodnight – even if they’re already asleep.” Easier said than done if you have a sleepless baby!

According to Cry-Sis, a British site for parents of newborns there are no hard and fast rules for how much a baby should sleep (www.cry-sis.org.uk). But it is really rare for a baby to come home from the hospital and begin sleeping through the night right away.

Newborns are used to getting an immediate response to basic needs like nourishment from things like a healthy diet and prenatal vitamins in the womb. So it is only natural that upon birth, they need food and attention more often than an older child. [Read more…]

easy stress reliefAmerican author Ray Bradbury once wrote, “Life should be touched, not strangled. You’ve got to relax….” If only it were that easy with everything that strangles our attention span in a day’s time. It seems we’re looking for easy stress relief!

It seems like with each new dawn there is a new reason to feel stressed whether it is due to work, marriage, or parenthood. Getting stress relief is almost as difficult as avoiding stress in the first place!

Lately I’ve found that one form of easy stress relief is a mineral that’s naturally found in my body – magnesium. Having the proper amount of magnesium needed for a healthy lifestyle has so many benefits, that it’s almost impossible to list them all. [Read more…]

good health supplementsThere is a picture on Pinterest that I just love. Below a plate of decadent chocolate squares is the caption, “Families are like fudge – mostly sweet with a few nuts.” But even our nuttiest family members need good health supplements to maintain optimal well-being.

According to the Office of Dietary Supplements (www.ods.od.nih.gov), “dietary supplements are not intended to treat, diagnose, mitigate, prevent, or cure disease.” So if you have any type of health condition, consult your doctor before starting any type of new dietary supplement regime.

So once your doctor gives you the go-ahead, consider trying MegaFood’s dietary supplements. They offer something for everyone in your family.

Here are some of the good health supplements that various members of my own family have used with great success to their overall well-being. Maybe they’ll be of use to either you or someone else in your family, too! [Read more…]

health benefits of royal jellyAs someone who suffers from a variety of allergies, I’d always heard about the health benefits of eating regular servings of pure, local, unprocessed honey. But it was not until recently that I learned about the health benefits of royal jelly, a by-product of beekeeping.

Poet and hymn writer Isaac Watts once penned a verse asking, “How doth does the little busy bee improve each shining hour, and gather honey all the day from each and every flower?” Honestly, there is nothing more relaxing than watching bees gather nectar.

Although most pregnancy and breastfeeding guides suggest eliminating honey due to potentially harmful ingredients such as C. botulinum and grayanotoxins, royal jelly has nutrients that increase fertility. [Read more…]

greens nutritional supplementWorld renowned chef Bobby Flay gives the advice, “Go vegetable heavy. Reverse the psychology of your plate by making meat the side dish and vegetables the main course.” If you’re a picky eater, then it’s time to check out benefits of a greens nutritional supplement.

Do you know why you get viruses? It’s because you lack all the vitamins and minerals that you need for a well-balanced, healthy lifestyle. From the common cold to something more serious like a bacterial infection, so much could be prevented if we’d just eat healthier.

I used to be one of these people. I didn’t care for the taste of some vegetables, and even though I knew my body desperately needed them, I loathed putting even one forkful of the nutrient-rich greens into my mouth.

Finally tired of feeling fatigued day in and day out, and done with suffering through sinus infections from mid-autumn until late spring every year, I asked my doctor for a prescription to help boost my energy. Imagine my bewilderment when she pointed me towards the local health food store. [Read more…]

reasons for gum swellingYour mouth is a primary form of communication with others, but did you know it also communicates with you?

For example, when there is a health issue it gives you a sign, such as swollen gums. Believe it or not, there are many reasons for gum swelling.

American clergyman Douglas Horton once said, “Smile, it’s free therapy.” Maybe that’s why women smile over 60 times per day! (web.augsburg.edu) But when I glanced in the mirror only to have my smiling reflection reveal swollen gums, I thought I would need to schedule a paid therapy session!

I brush, floss, drink water, and eat crunchy fruits and veggies. Isn’t that enough? Apparently it wasn’t enough. And just because I thought I was doing the right things didn’t mean that I was doing them correctly. [Read more…]

Lines under my eyesOne of my favorite quotes by American author Mark Twain used to be, “Wrinkles should merely indicate where smiles have been.” I remember quoting it to my grandmother. But the tables turned when, not long after a milestone birthday, I saw lines under my eyes!

These lines have charming names such as “laugh lines” or “crow’s feet”. But when you get down to it, these lines are plain old wrinkles, an inevitable sign of aging. While drinking enough water and eating healthy can delay the signs of aging, wrinkles are just plain unavoidable!

I thought I was safe. My personal care products are natural handmade and lack harsh detergents. I eat healthy and drink plenty of  water. I wear sunglasses and use sunscreen, since the sun breaks down elasticity in the skin. [Read more…]

Raw Food JuicerThe late holistic health practitioner Ann Wigmore once said, “The food you eat can be either the safest and most powerful form of medicine or the slowest form of poison.” It was that mindset that led me to investing in a raw food juicer.

I tried drinking organic, healthy juices from retail markets, but that often led to two huge problems. First was the cost. The price of one bottle wasn’t bad, but to get the proper amount of vitamins required drinking a lot of this juice.

The other problem was the taste. Some of the juices tasted great – but those were the ones that were loaded with the high sugar content and preservatives that I struggled to avoid. And others tasted like chilled vegetable soup, without the vegetables. [Read more…]

Low Cal DessertsPeople all over the country spent the first day of the New Year making resolutions to eat healthier. A lot of people vowed to give up all sweets, but there are plenty of low cal desserts to help you satisfy your sweet tooth without packing on the pounds.

Eating a well-balanced diet of healthy foods is so important. If you are already in good physical shape, then eating healthy can keep you in that condition. But for many people eating a well-balanced diet is mandatory.

Take for instance the more than 25 million Americans who have some form of diabetes. That is over 8% of the population and the situation is just getting worse! There were nearly 2 million newly diagnosed diabetics aged 20 or older in 2010 alone. (www.diabetes.org) [Read more…]
